Clear your traces

Anyone who shares your phone or computer can see in the browsing history which pages you opened. Here is how to delete that — it takes a minute. Afterwards, delete the entry for this page too.

Easiest: private mode

In private mode (Chrome: “Incognito”, Safari: “Private”, Samsung Internet: “Secret mode”) the browser keeps no history. When you close all private tabs, everything is gone. Downloads and screenshots stay, though.

Chrome on Android

  1. Tap ⋮ (three dots) at the top right → “History”.
  2. Tap “Delete browsing data”.
  3. Choose a time range, e.g. “Last hour” or “All time”.
  4. Tick “Browsing history”, “Cookies and site data” and “Cached images and files”.
  5. Tap “Delete data”.

To remove just one page: in the history, tap the ✕ next to the entry.

Safari on iPhone

  1. Tap the book icon at the bottom, then the clock icon (history) at the top.
  2. Tap “Clear” at the bottom.
  3. Choose a time range, e.g. “Last hour” or “All history”.

To remove just one page: swipe the entry to the left in the history → “Delete”. To clear everything at once: Settings → (Apps →) Safari → “Clear History and Website Data”.

Samsung Internet

  1. Tap ☰ (menu) at the bottom right → “History”.
  2. Tap ⋮ at the top right → “Clear history”.
  3. Confirm.

More thorough: ☰ → Settings → “Personal browsing data” → “Delete browsing data”, and also select cookies and cache there. Depending on the version, the items may be named slightly differently.

Chrome on a computer

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Delete (Mac: ⌘ + Shift + Delete).
  2. Choose a time range.
  3. Tick “Browsing history”, “Cookies and other site data” and “Cached images and files”.
  4. Click “Delete data”.

Single pages: Ctrl + H (Mac: ⌘ + Y) opens the history, remove the entry there.

What “Quick exit” does

The “Quick exit” button at the top of every page (or the Esc key) instantly opens wetter.at. It replaces the current page’s entry in the back history: anyone who taps “Back” afterwards does not land on hülf:me. The pages you looked at before are still in your browsing history, though. So clear your history afterwards — or search in private mode from the start.

What else leaves traces

The browser does not delete these traces:

  • Call log: calls to a service show up in your phone’s call log. You can delete them one by one there.
  • Search history: if you are signed in with a Google account, Google saves your searches under “My Activity”. You can delete them there.
  • Sync: if your browser is linked to an account, your history also shows up on other devices. Deleting then works everywhere.
  • Offline store: hülf:me only keeps the emergency page in the browser for offline use — no visited pages. “Clear cookies and site data” removes that too.

If someone controls your phone

If you think someone is monitoring your phone, search on a different device instead — for example at a friend’s or in a library. In danger: police 133. Women’s emergency line: 01 71719, around the clock.
