Debt counseling in Vienna — Free and confidential
Debt is no reason for shame — it's a solvable problem. In Vienna, there's free, professional debt counseling that helps you find a way out. Whether it's rent arrears, consumer loans, or collection agencies: the first step is always the hardest, but it's free.
1. State-recognized debt counseling
In Vienna, there are several state-recognized debt counseling centers. The largest is the Schuldnerberatung Wien (SBW) run by Fonds Soziales Wien. They offer free counseling, help negotiate with creditors, and guide you through the entire debt resolution process — including personal bankruptcy if needed.
Important: State-recognized debt counseling is always free. If someone charges you for debt counseling, it's not a recognized center.
→ For you if: you need a structured plan to reduce your debt.
2. Rent arrears and eviction prevention
If you can't pay your rent anymore, it's existentially threatening — but there's help before it comes to eviction. The Wohnschirm (federal program) covers rent arrears in certain cases. Volkshilfe Wien's housing security office helps negotiate with landlords.
The key is: act as early as possible. The earlier you seek help, the more options are available. Once an eviction date is set, it becomes significantly harder.
→ For you if: you can't manage your rent anymore and fear eviction.
3. Personal bankruptcy — The fresh start
If your debts are so high that you can realistically never pay them back, there's personal bankruptcy (debt regulation proceedings). The court reviews your situation and sets a payment plan — after fulfilling it (usually 3-5 years), you're debt-free. Debt counseling guides you through the entire process for free.
→ For you if: you see no realistic way to pay off your debt.
4. Social counseling and immediate help
If debt is only part of the problem — for example combined with unemployment, mental stress, or housing loss — general social counseling helps. Caritas social counseling, Samariterbund, and the MA 40 social centers advise for free and help you address all issues together.
→ For you if: debt isn't your only problem.
